A South African rivalry will come to the fore this afternoon as the Stormers and Bulls contest the final of the United Rugby Championship in Cape Town.
The emergence of both of these South African sides as contenders came as a surprise to some, especially given how the United Rugby Championship started out.
In the early part of the campaign, the South African sides drafted in to compete against Europe’s best could scarcely lay a glove on their Northern Hemisphere opponents.
It looked as though adapting would prove to be a stiff task, but both sides rallied throughout their campaigns and worked their way towards the knockout stages.
The Bulls wormed their way past Leinster with a hugely impressive 27-26 victory over Leo Cullen’s side at the RDS.
It was a loss which stung the Irish privince, having just lost the Heineken Champions Cup against La Rochelle the previous week.
Meanwhile, the Stormers put another Irish province to the sword as they defeated Ulster in the other semi-final.
A tight and keenly contested game was bookended and ultimately decided by a late try from Warrick Gelant which was subsequently converted by Manie Libbock to end the game on a 17-15 scoreline in favour of the Stormers.
With the Irish sides out of the equation, this will be an interesting affair for neutrals to tune into.
