
Xtra Time Web Desk: Reigning world champions France sailed into the quarter finals of the FIFA World Cup 2022 after a comprehensive 3-1 win over Poland at the Al Thumama Stadium on Sunday. Oliver Giroud (44’) and Kylian Mbappe (74’,90+1’) were on target for the French side while Robert Lewandowski scored a consolation goal from penalty during stoppage time (90+9’). Didier Deschamps side will now take on the winners of England versus Senegal match in the quarter final.

Olivier Giroud became France’s all-time leading goal-scorer with 52 goals as he surpassed Thierry Henry’s record with a neat first-half finish (44’). The 36-year-old, who had equalled Henry’s tally of 51 after scoring twice in their opening Group D win over Australia, broke the record on his 117th appearance for France.
France made it 3-0 with Kylian Mbappe scoring in 74th and stoppage time. The Paris Saint Germain striker has now taken his tally to 5 goals, making him the highest goal-scorer in Qatar 2022 so far.
Robert Lewandowski scored a 99th-minute re-taken penalty to score a late consolation goal for Poland.
