B.C. Connected Paralympians Major Contributor to Sensational Results for Canada at Beijing 2022 – Canadian Sport Institute Pacific

Victoria, BC – Another successful Paralympics is in the books for Team Canada following their outstanding nine days in Beijing. Eighteen of Team Canada’s 48 athletes (38%) had a B.C. connection and more than half of those athletes brought home hardware after earning a spot on the podium. Medals from B.C. connected athletes made up 60% of Team Canada’s total medals.

At the Beijing 2022 Paralympics, Team Canada had 48 Paralympians.  Of those:

• 37 athletes won medals
• 9 were multiple medallists
• 12 athletes won a medal in their debut Games
• 18 members (38%) of Team Canada had a connection to B.C.; i.e. train in B.C. and/or name somewhere in B.C. as their hometown
• 17 athletes (36%) were affiliated with CSI Pacific; i.e. receive support from CSI Pacific and/or the PacificSport network
• 11 out of 18 B.C. connected athletes (61%) won medals
• 10 out of 17 CSI Pacific affiliated athletes (59%) won medals
• On top of the medals, there were another eight Top 5 performances

These numbers show a continuation of strong results for B.C. connected and CSI Pacific affiliated athletes over the Tokyo and Beijing Olympics and Paralympics, all of which happened in the past eight months.

CSI Pacific affiliated athletes had the following results over the past year:

• Beijing Paralympics: Made up 35% of Team Canada, won 56% of the medals
• Beijing Olympics: Made up 32% of Team Canada, won 58% of the medals
• Tokyo Paralympics: Made up 23% of Team Canada, won 43% of the medals
• Tokyo Olympics: Made up 50% of Team Canada, won 42% of the medals
  • including all members of the Women’s gold medal-winning Soccer team

“What all these athletes have accomplished over the past year of competition and throughout this last quadrennial is truly inspirational,” said Wendy Pattenden, CEO, CSI Pacific. “The Paralympians in Beijing continued to show Canada as being a major player in sport on the world stage. It is even more impressive when noting that we were one of just two countries to win medals in all five winter Paralympic sports.”

The Winter Paralympic medal total was the third highest in Canada’s history and that follows on the heels of other incredible results over the past year, including Canada winning the most ever medals at a non-boycotted Summer Games last year in Tokyo.

“Canada has had an incredible 96 medals to celebrate over the last eight months and CSI Pacific affiliated athletes have accounted for half of those medals,” continued Pattenden “It’s been our privilege to work with so many of these athletes, coaches and National Sport Organizations and be part of their support team as they hit these international heights.”

The commitment and support of National and Provincial Sport Organizations (NSOs/PSOs) throughout British Columbia, as well as support and contributions from all levels of government and the commitment and leadership of viaSport have been a major reason B.C. connected athletes have been able to reach their sport goals.
