Although it feels like the NFL season started not too long ago, there’s a pretty healthy sample size with which to analyze disappointing teams. It’s not impossible for fortunes to turn around significantly in the second half of the NFL season, but we are able to form opinions about how outcomes have matched or fallen short of preseason expectations. Fans who partake in live betting may try to stay away from a few teams in particular who have not lived up to the billing thus far.
Denver Broncos
The acquisition of Pro Bowl QB Russell Wilson, combined with the hiring of offensive-minded head coach Nathaniel Hackett was supposed to greatly improve Denver’s fortunes in the 2022 NFL season. As it turns out, that tandem has left a lot to be desired, and Broncos fans have been frustrated by the lack of progress shown.
Although he has battled a couple of injuries, Wilson looks like a shell of the player that was among the league’s best with the Seattle Seahawks. He hasn’t been able to adequately get the team’s young weapons involved in the passing game, and the mobility that he used to display to extend plays appear to have been significantly reduced. Losing budding star running back Javonte Williams to a torn ACL didn’t help matters, but a quarterback who just signed a lucrative extension was expected to do more.
As a first-time head coach, Hackett has looked overwhelmed and lost at points of the season. His time management decisions during the fourth quarter of games have been widely questioned. He even hired a consultant to help him manage game operations, which is not a good sign for the leader of a team.
Green Bay Packers
There were a lot of questions surrounding Green Bay heading into the 2022 NFL season, with the largest being how the team would replace All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams. Throughout the last several years, Adams developed a special rapport with perennial MVP contender Aaron Rodgers, and the duo was able to connect via intuitive chemistry developed over that period of time. While he still has that level of trust in veteran Randall Cobb, it is safe to say that Rodgers doesn’t feel comfortable with any other receivers.
This has severely hampered the team’s ability to move the ball downfield, and it remains to be seen whether rookies Christian Watson or Romeo Doubs can emerge as consistent threats on the outside. Green Bay has dropped some games this year that they would normally win. Until they’re able to figure out their passing game, look for the team to continue to rely on running backs Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon.
Indianapolis Colts
It was all lined up perfectly for the Colts. Everyone in the AFC South figured to either take a step back this season or continue to rebuild for the future. Indianapolis was the only franchise that appeared ready to win now, and on paper was set up to easily win the division.
Things have not unfolded according to that plan, and the team finds itself in a scramble to stay relevant in the AFC playoff race. Veteran quarterback Matt Ryan has not worked out as head coach Frank Reich would’ve hoped, and the team has turned to second-year player Sam Ehlinger under center. The young quarterback is not going to be expected to win games on his own, which means that Indianapolis’ defense and running game will need to step up to save their season.
